Ring-spun cotton describes how cotton fibers are turned into yarn. It is a spinning method, not a fiber type, fabric weight, fit, or automatic quality grade. That distinction is useful when two T-shirts both say “100% cotton” but feel and wear differently.

Read ring-spun as one line on a spec sheet. Then read the fiber, whether the yarn is combed, the fabric weight, the construction, the fit, and the finish. The full garment is the decision. One appealing term cannot make that decision for you.

What ring-spun cotton actually means

Cotton begins as short fibers that need to be cleaned, aligned, drawn, and twisted into a continuous yarn. Ring spinning adds twist through a ring-and-spindle process as the fibers are drafted into a more regular strand. The result is commonly associated with a smoother surface and a more consistent yarn than rotor, or open-end, spinning.

That is the useful definition. Ring-spun does not mean a special species of cotton, a particular knit, or a guaranteed level of softness. It tells you how the yarn was made. The fabric can still feel different depending on fiber length, yarn count, knit structure, dye, finishing, weight, and construction.

Ring-spun vs. open-end cotton

What does combed ring-spun cotton mean?

“Combed ring-spun cotton” combines two descriptions. Combing is the fiber-preparation step. Ring spinning is the yarn-making step. In plain language, the cotton was cleaned and aligned more selectively, then spun through the ring process.

Combing removes a final portion of short fibers, neps, and impurities. The Textile Exchange guide notes that combed yarns are usually finer, stronger, smoother, and more uniform than carded yarns. That does not make a combed ring-spun T-shirt universally better. It gives you more information about the yarn and lets you ask a better follow-up question: does that yarn sit inside a garment whose weight, fit, and construction suit the use?

Do not confuse “combed” with “ring-spun.” A shirt can be ring-spun and carded, ring-spun and combed, or made with another spinning method. When both terms appear, they are describing different stages.

How to read a T-shirt spec sheet without overvaluing one word

  1. Start with fiber content. Confirm whether the garment is cotton, a blend, or a technical fabric. The fiber sets the starting point for the conversation.
  2. Separate spinning from combing. Ring-spun describes the yarn-making method. Combed describes a preparation step. Look for both, not one as a shortcut for the other.
  3. Check weight next. Use GSM or oz./yd² to estimate how much structure or warmth the fabric may bring, then read it with the fit.
  4. Look for construction. Side seams, collar rib, stitching, and the garment’s shape affect how the tee behaves after the first impression.
  5. Match the fit to the job. A structured regular fit, a relaxed fit, and an athletic fit solve different problems. None is the default for every body or schedule.

  • Is the fiber content clear?
  • Does the label say ring-spun, open-end, or nothing about spinning?

  • Does the stated fit and finish match how you actually want the shirt to sit?

If the answer to the last four questions is missing, do not fill the gap with the word “ring-spun.” Ask for the full specification or choose based on the information you can verify.
