What does GSM mean in clothing? It means grams per square meter: a measure of how much a given area of fabric weighs. It is useful when you are comparing garments online, but it is not a quality score. A higher number can mean more body or warmth when you compare similar fabrics. Is higher GSM better?

Conversions are useful when you are comparing product pages that use different systems. They are still estimates. Also separate fabric weight from garment weight. A larger hoodie can contain more total fabric than a smaller T-shirt even when the fabric GSM is lower. GSM describes the material per area, not the finished product sitting on a scale.
