Short answer: recycled mesh is not one single type of fabric. Recycled describes where some of the material comes from. Mesh describes how the textile is constructed, usually with open spaces between yarns. One word describes the input. The other describes the structure.
That distinction matters when you are buying activewear. A recycled fiber can become jersey, interlock, woven fabric, or mesh. A mesh fabric can be made with different fibers and finished for different jobs. The label gives you a starting point, not a complete verdict on feel, fit, coverage, or performance.
Start with the two words
Recycled describes the source
In textile language, recycled polyester means polyester made from a recycled polyester source. Textile Exchange describes two broad recycling routes: mechanical recycling, which melts plastic and re-extrudes it into yarn, and chemical recycling, which breaks the polymer into molecular parts before reforming it into yarn.
The useful point is not the process vocabulary. It is the boundary. Recycled tells you something about the material input. It does not tell you the fabric weight, the openness of the knit, the amount of stretch, the recovery after movement, the cut of the garment, or how the finished piece will feel on your body.
Mesh describes the construction
Mesh is an open textile structure with spaces between the yarns. The openings can be fine or more visible. The structure may be knitted or woven. Its feel and behavior depend on the fiber, yarn, opening pattern, weight, finish, and the way the garment is cut.
That is why two garments can both be called mesh and still serve different purposes. A dense mesh lining, an open training short, and a decorative fashion layer are not interchangeable. The shared word describes the construction family. It does not erase the rest of the specification.
What recycled mesh tells you, and what it does not

Do not turn "recycled" into a promise it does not make
A recycled-content statement can be useful, but it should stay specific. The Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides summary warns against broad, unqualified environmental claims and says recycled-content claims should be clear about what material was recovered and how much of the product contains it.
For a buyer, the practical rule is simple: ask what is documented. "Recycled mesh" is a material description. It is not automatically a claim that the garment is sustainable, recyclable, ethical, durable, or right for every activity. Those are separate questions, and each needs its own evidence.
A five-part buyer's check
1. Name the fiber and the share
Look for the fiber content first. Then look for the share of recycled material, if the product page or label provides it. A precise percentage is more useful than an adjective by itself. If the percentage is not stated, keep your language precise and treat "recycled" as a description of the material rather than a complete certification statement.

2. Ask what the mesh looks like on the garment
Mesh can be open, fine, dense, lined, printed, or layered. Look at the current product images and description, then ask what you need from the fabric. Do you want a light layer for training? Do not buy the word alone. Check the actual garment. The opening pattern, the cut, and the layers around the mesh will shape the experience more than the material label in isolation.
3. Separate stretch direction from fit
Two-way stretch is useful information, but it is not a fit guide. It tells you that the material is intended to give along a primary direction. It does not tell you how a waistband sits, how much room the leg has, or whether the piece will feel secure during your movement.
